SCARCE Collects Shoes for Re-Use and Recycling

For the sixth year in a row, SCARCE has participated in collecting shoes for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program, which turns worn-out gym shoes into sports surfaces, playgrounds and Nike products. Beginning on Earth Day, SCARCE collected 7,699 pairs of gym shoes from local schools, churches, businesses, youth groups and individuals in five weeks. Over 6,000 pairs went to Nike’s Reuse Program and 1,442 pairs were donated to local charities such as PADS, Salvation Army, Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans and AmVets, as well as international relief programs.

Once the shoes are delivered to Nike, they will be demanufactured so that the recycled “Nike Grind” material can be used to make new products. By recycling old gym shoes, Nike decreases the environmental impact of using new raw materials and saves used shoes from being sent to landfills. To learn more about what happens to the shoes that are recycled, please visit Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe Program.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to get in contact SCARCE at 630 - 545 - 9710. Questions are welcome and so is the help!!

The 2010 gym shoe collection begins Monday, April 19 and lasts for one month.
Please call 630.545.9710 to make an appointment if you have shoes to drop off.
