GET RID OF YOUR OLD WORN GYM SHOES

Got shoes that you don't need or want? DON'T THROW THEM AWAY -- DONATE THEM!

The 2010 shoe drive ended May 19th. In 2011 from mid-April to mid-May, you can donate shoes at SCARCE to get re-used or recycled. If you bring a large amount, you can help us out by sorting them into boxes/bags labeled with the following and number of shoes or pairs:
- Broken, worn down, torn, unwearable gym shoes (no cleats)
- Kids light-up shoes
- Good/re-wearable single shoes (without a matching pair)
- Good/re-wearable pairs of shoes for charity
- Other

If you want to help us out even further, donate your good/re-wearable pairs of shoes directly to your local re-sale shop or other charity!

About the annual shoe collection:

For the sixth year in a row, SCARCE is participating in collecting shoes for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program, which turns worn-out gym shoes into Nike products. Any donated shoes that are not old gym shoes are given to charities, including single shoes for leg amputees.

Once the shoes are delivered to Nike, they will be demanufactured so that the recycled “Nike Grind” material can be used to make new products like sports surfaces, playgrounds, carpet padding, insulation, basketballs, frisbees, and other Nike products. By recycling old gym shoes, Nike decreases the environmental impact of consuming new raw materials and saves the materials from being wasted and adding to the garbage in landfills. To learn more about what happens to the shoes that are recycled, please visit Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe Program.
