Composting Seminar - Nov. 19 - A Huge SuccessOn the 19th, 130 stakeholders from around the state attended the Food Scrap Composting Seminar hosted by SCARCE & the Illinois Recycling Association. Two new pieces of legislation signed by Governor Quinn are projected to spur the growth of organics collection and market development for compost material throughout the State. With food scraps comprising up to 30% of solid waste, they represent the largest single material category in landfills. Removing this material from landfill disposal and returning its nutrient value to the soil will dramatically increase the diversion rate in Illinois and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from methane generation in landfills. The attendees heard plans for new composting facilities and about grant funding opportunities to support this new industry. Excellent speakers presented useful information about each aspect of food scrap composting with examples from other states who have already implemented food scrap composting successfully. The presentations are available below.
